The ‘YouTube’ generation is generally defined as children under 12 years of age who spend more of their time watching videos on this platform than actually watching television. After all, ‘television’ watching is what their parents do, and that’s just not cool anymore.

With every technological advance or change there are trends that begin to develop. Some happen relatively quickly while others can happen over a longer stretch of time. Here are 6 tech trends that are actually defining the YouTube generation.

Trend #1: Screens are getting smaller.

Trend #2: … Spending more time close to the screen.

That’s right, kids hold their tablets, iPhones, and other tech devices closer to their face when watching YouTube videos or even playing games. This trend could very well have repercussions later on in life, though it’s unclear just how bad it is for kids to be spending this much time so close to screens.

Trend #3: More emotional investment in brands.

Kids today are more closely aligned with certain brands because they have a more intimate relationship with ads or programs some of those manufacturers create. For example, Disney has continued to expand its empire by creating programs kids love, and those actors or characters grow up with those children, and it’s easier for the YouTube generation to stay in touch with those characters.

Trend #4: Robots, robots, robots.

Robots are now the ‘in’ thing to own. Whether it’s a drone or a small programmable and fully controllable robot, kids can have these gadgets because they are far more affordable than ever before.

Trend #5: Casual gaming.

The generation before the YouTube generation became known as hard core gamers. They took to their video game consoles and played for hours, often competing with friends to get the highest score or reach the highest level. Today’s YouTube generation has a tendency to be more casual with regard to their gaming experience. They simply don’t feel as compelled to be devoted to any particular game.

Trend #6: Virtual creativity.

During their parents’ generation, making things meant actually cutting out paper, gluing things together, and having something tangible to hold. Today’s generation of children can still do that, but they also have more access to technology and that means they can create their own worlds digitally and virtually. Minecraft is a perfect example of this trend. Whether it is actually benefitting children or not is yet to be seen, though some child psychologists believe these activities can harbor some great benefits, when used in moderation.

What will the next few years bring with regard to tech trends and the young generations growing up today? Only time will truly tell, but if the YouTube generation is any indication, the sky could very well be the only limit (and that may soon find its barrier blown completely free).
